Selenium

Selenium protects normal cell function by scavenging harmful free radicals. As a natural antioxidant, it reduces oxidative damage and slows the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids as a component of selenoprotein P and selenoenzymes like glutathione peroxidase. The highest concentrations of selenium are found in the thyroid gland, where it neutralizes reactive oxygen species generated during thyroid hormone synthesis. Selenium also plays a crucial role in thyroid hormone production.
