L-theanine, an amino acid naturally present in tea, has demonstrated a calming impact on the brain by promoting the generation of alpha brain waves associated with a wakeful yet relaxed state. Simultaneously, it reduces beta brain waves linked to sensations of restlessness and nervousness. L-theanine influences neurotransmitter levels, including dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and glutamate, and is metabolized into gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter pivotal for relaxation and memory.

The temporary promotion of relaxation and the alleviation of stress are potential benefits of L-theanine. In a study involving 50 female subjects aged 18–22 years, categorized into high-anxiety and low-anxiety groups, participants were administered either water (as a control) or a solution containing 50 mg or 200 mg of L-theanine. Brain wave measurements taken over 60 minutes revealed a noteworthy increase in alpha brain waves in the group receiving 200 mg of L-theanine, indicating a relaxation effect compared to the control group.2 Similar outcomes were observed in another clinical trial where 35 healthy young volunteers received 50 mg of L-theanine, resulting in heightened alpha brain wave activity for 105 minutes afterward.
